Flexible School Start Times Improve Teen Sleep, Health, and Academic Performance

High school students often struggle with sleep, finding it tricky to fall asleep at a reasonable time and wake up early for school. This is due to a biological shift in teenagers’ internal clocks, causing them to naturally fall asleep later. Many adolescents experience chronic sleep deprivation, impacting their well-being, mental health, physical development, and academic performance.

The Science Behind Teen Sleep

According to developmental pediatrician Oskar Jenni, Associate Professor at the University of Zurich, adolescent sleep biology makes it challenging for teenagers to fall asleep early enough to meet their sleep needs. Research suggests that delaying school start times could significantly benefit students.

A New Approach: Flexible School Schedules

Researchers at the University of Zurich and the University Children’s Hospital Zurich investigated the potential of flexible school schedules to address adolescent sleep needs. Joëlle Albrecht, Reto Huber, and Oskar Jenni studied a school in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, that implemented a flexible start time model three years ago.

The Gossau Upper Secondary School now allows students to choose between starting their school day at 7:30 am or 8:30 am, attending modules before regular classes, at midday, or in the afternoon. This flexibility aims to align with students’ natural sleep patterns.

Study Findings: More Sleep and Improved Well-being

The research team surveyed 754 students before and after the implementation of the flexible schedule. The results were compelling: 95% of students opted to start school later, averaging 38 minutes later than under the previous system. This resulted in students getting up 40 minutes later and increasing their total sleep time on school days by an average of 45 minutes.

Beyond increased sleep duration, students reported fewer difficulties falling asleep and an improved health-related quality of life. Objective learning outcomes in English and mathematics improved compared to previous cantonal test results.

Addressing the Mental Health Crisis

The study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, demonstrates that flexible school start times can be an effective strategy for reducing chronic sleep deprivation and improving adolescent mental health and academic performance. Co-author Reto Huber emphasizes that delaying school start times can contribute to addressing the growing mental health crisis among students.

A 2022 study by the Swiss Health Observatory (Obsan) found that 47% of 11- to 15-year-olds experienced recurring or chronic psycho-affective complaints, including sadness, fatigue, anxiety, and difficulty sleeping.

Implications for Education

These findings suggest that flexible school schedules offer a practical and effective approach to supporting adolescent health and academic success. By accommodating the biological sleep needs of teenagers, schools can create a more conducive learning environment and promote overall well-being.
