China is currently immersed in the festivities of the Spring Festival, also known as the Lunar New Year, with millions of tourists participating in cultural events and boosting domestic consumption. However, the celebrations are shadowed by recent tragic incidents involving fireworks, prompting government warnings and increased safety measures.
A Month-Long Cultural and Tourism Campaign
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched a month-long cultural and tourism campaign in late January, aiming to cater to the increased demand for travel and entertainment during the holiday period. Approximately 30,000 activities are being held nationwide, focusing on traditional New Year customs, performances, and exhibitions. In Xiangyang City, Hubei Province, thousands of lanterns illuminate the night sky above the ancient city, reflecting on the Hanjiang River. Other regions are featuring unique displays, such as a 110-meter-long dragon made of lanterns in Xihe, Anhui Province, and molten iron fireworks shows integrated with dragon dances in Xiangyang, Hubei Province. Traditional performances like lion dances, dragon dances, and folk dramas are also taking place in various locations, including Lanzhou, Gansu Province, and Jinhu County, Jiangsu Province.
Tragic Fireworks Explosions Raise Safety Concerns
The Spring Festival spirit is tempered by recent, devastating explosions at fireworks facilities. On February 18, 2026, an explosion at a fireworks shop in Xiangyang City, Hubei Province, killed 12 people. This incident followed a similar blast in Jiangsu province on Sunday, which resulted in eight fatalities and two injuries. The Chinese government has issued warnings about the dangers of fireworks, recognizing them as the biggest risk during the Spring Festival period.
Economic Impact of the Spring Festival
Despite the safety concerns, the Spring Festival is a significant driver of economic activity in China. The cultural and tourism campaign is expected to generate substantial revenue, with the government aiming to boost domestic consumption and support the tourism industry.
