Stellantis Layoffs in Tychy Spark Union Concerns and Severance Disputes

The Solidarita trade union has voiced notable concerns regarding planned layoffs at the Stellantis plant in Tychy, Poland, warning of potentially widespread repercussions throughout the Silesia region. The Tychy facility, responsible for the production of the alfa Romeo Junior, Jeep Avenger, and components for the Fiat 600, maintains close working relationships with 58 suppliers, leading union officials to believe a reduction in output could jeopardize thousands of jobs across the supply chain.

A central point of contention revolves around severance packages. Solidarita is advocating for compensation of up to 36 months’ wages, citing precedents established by Stellantis in comparable situations at other European plants. Though, Stellantis management has currently proposed a maximum of 24 months’ salary, and only for employees with over 30 years of service.

Stellantis, formed in 2021 through the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA Group, is a global automotive leader with approximately 240,000 employees operating across more than 130 countries and 30 production sites. The company, like much of the European automotive sector,is currently navigating a period of economic challenges and industry-wide crisis. The outcome of negotiations between the union and management will be crucial in mitigating the impact of the layoffs and ensuring fair treatment for affected workers.
