Swish Expands Payment Options with Integrated Card Support
Swish, Sweden’s dominant mobile payment app, is evolving beyond peer-to-peer transfers to become a more versatile payment solution for consumers. A latest feature allows users to link payment cards directly within the app, enabling purchases in physical stores – even those without traditional Swish integration – using NFC technology. This expansion positions Swish as a potential alternative to established mobile payment services.
Card Payments via NFC
Initially rolled out to Android users in December 2024, the card linking feature allows users to pay with their mobile phones via Near Field Communication (NFC) in stores where card payments are accepted. This functionality extends Swish’s reach to locations, including international retailers, that may not currently support direct Swish payments.
Sparbanken Syd was among the first banks to offer this functionality, with Handelsbanken following suit. More Swedish banks are expected to integrate the feature progressively. The linked card must be associated with the same bank as the user’s Swish account and can be a personal, company, debit, or credit card. The ability to add multiple cards is also anticipated.
Currently, this feature is limited to in-store purchases and cannot be used for online transactions.
iPhone Support Coming Soon
Following Apple’s decision to open its NFC technology to third-party developers, Swish has confirmed that the card linking feature will also be available to iPhone users. While a specific launch date hasn’t been announced, Swish has stated it will provide updates “at a later date.” Users will be notified within the Swish app when the feature is available and their bank supports it.
A Step Towards Universal Payment
By integrating card payments, Swish aims to consolidate all payment methods within a single app, streamlining the user experience. This move positions Swish as a more comprehensive payment alternative, potentially increasing its adoption and solidifying its role in the evolving digital payments landscape.
