Teens & AI: Dangerous Diet Advice Raises Health Concerns

The Growing Risk of AI Diet Advice for Teens

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly accessible, teenagers are turning to it for advice on dieting and weight loss. While AI offers convenience, health experts are raising concerns about the potential for inaccurate, dangerous and even harmful information, particularly for adolescents.

The Appeal of AI for Teens

AI chatbots and online tools provide readily available answers to questions about weight loss, diet plans, and exercise routines. Dr. Michelle Bowden, a pediatrician and medical director of the eating disorder services program at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, isn’t surprised teens are seeking guidance from AI. “I don’t sense surprised that they’re going to AI when they’re thinking about how can I lose some weight or what is a healthy diet, or how can I build muscle,” she said.

Why AI Diet Advice Can Be Dangerous

Experts warn that AI-generated health advice can be problematic for several reasons:

  • Inaccuracy: AI algorithms rely on vast datasets from the internet, which may include unreliable or outdated information. As Dr. Bowden notes, AI “uses everything it can find on the internet, which means that some of the things it may find may not be helpful information.”
  • Lack of Personalization: AI doesn’t account for individual health histories, puberty, activity levels, or specific nutritional needs. “AI, it’s a system, it is a tool. It doesn’t really know anything about you or your family history, so it is limiting information that you are getting from it,” explains Jaquay Brister, a parent in Memphis.
  • Adult-Focused Recommendations: Many AI diet plans are based on adult data, which is inappropriate for growing teenagers.
  • Potential for Disordered Eating: Restrictive diets suggested by AI can lead to malnutrition, obsessive eating patterns, and the development of eating disorders. Dr. Bowden’s hospital is seeing an increase in patients using AI to calculate calories or find meal plans.

Specific Health Risks

Following AI-generated diet plans can lead to several health problems in teens:

  • Slow digestion
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Low blood sugar (potentially causing fainting)
  • Dangerously low heart rates requiring hospitalization

Warning Signs for Parents

Parents should be vigilant for signs that their teen may be relying on AI for diet advice and developing unhealthy habits. These include:

  • Suddenly cutting out foods they used to enjoy
  • Becoming overly focused on food choices and calorie counting
  • Allowing food choices to negatively impact social activities

The Importance of Professional Guidance

Health professionals emphasize that online tools cannot replace personalized advice from a doctor or registered dietitian. “Anything you found on the internet is not the same as what you get from human interaction,” Dr. Bowden states. “Your doctor or your dietitian is going to be able to capture your exact phase of life, your exact activity level, your exact size and shape and help give you the advice for the nutrition that you need.”

The Broader Trend

The rise of AI-driven health advice is part of a larger trend, with AI being used for various health-related purposes. However, the potential for misinformation and harm necessitates caution, especially when it comes to vulnerable populations like teenagers. FOX13 Memphis reports on these growing concerns.
