tencent Diversifies as Key Game Faces Scrutiny

Tencent, China’s gaming giant, is aggressively expanding internationally. This isn’t just about growth; it’s about future-proofing the company as the domestic market shows signs of stagnation. They’re not only aiming to attract more players to their existing games, but also making considerable investments in a wide range of intellectual properties.

The risks of over-reliance on the Chinese market were recently highlighted in a surprising trial in Shenzhen. The case centered around Honor of Kings, the world’s highest-grossing mobile game. Launched in 2015, the game remains incredibly popular, generating approximately USD 1 billion in revenue between January and June, according to AppMagic.

The core of the dispute? A plaintiff alleges that Honor of Kings‘ matchmaking system is deliberately designed to pair winning players with weaker opponents. They’re demanding Tencent reveal the algorithm. Tencent refused, arguing that disclosure would create opportunities for exploitation and manipulation.

Tencent’s gaming division is a major revenue source, contributing roughly 30% of the company’s total income. A significant portion – around two-thirds – of that revenue currently comes from China, largely driven by titles like Honor of Kings. A court ruling against Tencent, finding evidence of manipulated matchmaking, and a subsequent player boycott could be devastating.

Strong performance from established games like Honor of Kings fueled Tencent’s April-June earnings, released on August 13th.The company reported a 15% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching RMB 184.5 billion (USD 25.8 billion), and a 17% rise in net profit, totaling RMB 55.6 billion (USD 7.8 billion).

Despite releasing numerous new games, Tencent still hasn’t identified a true successor to Honor of Kings. finding that next blockbuster is critical for ensuring long-term,sustainable growth. The company’s global expansion and continued innovation are now more critically important than ever.
