Taylor Fritz has once again demonstrated his dominance at the lexus Eastbourne Open, claiming his fourth tournament title and solidifying his position as a leading force on grass. The top-seeded american defeated fellow countryman J. Brooksby, a lucky loser ranked 149th globally, in straight sets – 7-5, 6-1 – on June 28th, adding to his extraordinary record at the ATP250 event.

This victory marks Fritz’s second consecutive Eastbourne championship, following his win in 2022, and surpasses all othre players in tournament history with four overall titles. He joins an elite group of active players with significant success on grass, becoming only the second to achieve five career wins on the surface, trailing only Novak Djokovic’s eight.

The 27-year-old Fritz navigated a challenging path to the final, overcoming a series of formidable opponents. He initially defeated João Fonseca of Brazil (ranked 57th) in the second round, followed by a quarterfinal victory against Marcos Giron (USA, ranked 46th). A convincing semifinal win against sixth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain secured his place in the championship match.

Brooksby, 24, had also enjoyed a triumphant run to the final, notably upsetting fourth-seeded Ugo Humbert of France in the semifinals. However, he proved unable to withstand Fritz’s powerful game and experience.

The first set was a closely contested affair, with Brooksby securing an early break in the fifth game. Fritz, however, immediately responded, breaking back to level the score. The set ultimately hinged on the 12th game, where Fritz secured a crucial break to take the lead, 6-5, and then closed it out.

Fritz’s momentum continued into the second set, where he asserted his dominance with breaks in the fourth and sixth games. This allowed him to secure a pleasant straight-sets victory, marking the fourth time he has achieved this at Eastbourne.”I don’t know what it is indeed, but whenever I come here I feel like I’m playing great tennis,” Fritz commented on the ATP’s official website. “For me, this is always a great week. It’s where I won my first tour title, so I think it will continue to be a special place forever.”

Having also triumphed at the Boss Open in Stuttgart earlier this season, Fritz enters Wimbledon – which begins on June 30th – with significant confidence and momentum. Currently ranked fifth in the world, he will be looking to translate his grass-court prowess into a deep run at the prestigious Grand Slam tournament.
