Texas Attorney General Investigates School Districts Over Student Protests of ICE Actions

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched investigations into three school districts – North East Independent School District (NEISD) in San Antonio, Dallas Independent School District, and Manor Independent School District – over student protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The investigations center on allegations that school officials failed to ensure student safety and minimize disruptions to classroom instruction during these demonstrations.

Concerns of Facilitation and Safety

The Attorney General’s office is examining claims that administrators and faculty may have actively organized the protests. Paxton stated he will not allow Texas schools to become “breeding grounds for the radical Left’s open borders agenda” and warned that those who unlawfully facilitate student participation in protests targeting law enforcement will be held accountable.

Demands for Information

Attorney General Paxton has requested information from each of the three school districts regarding policies related to students leaving campus, excused absence procedures, security protocols, and internal communications concerning the protests. The Office of the Attorney General will investigate the use of public funds and whether any laws were violated.

Broader Context and Previous Investigations

This investigation follows a similar inquiry into the Austin Independent School District, part of an ongoing effort to address the facilitation of anti-law enforcement protests. The current investigations stem from student walkouts earlier this year, part of a national movement protesting ICE actions following the deaths of individuals during immigration enforcement operations. Students in cities across Texas, including Austin, San Antonio, and Waco, called for the dismantling of ICE.

State Response and Potential Consequences

Governor Greg Abbott has indicated that districts could face funding cuts, and students involved in unlawful activity during the protests could be subject to arrest. The Texas Education Agency has warned that districts found to have facilitated walkouts could face state intervention.

NEISD Investigation Focus

The investigation into North East Independent School District specifically centers around Churchill High School. NEISD stated it is fully cooperating and providing documentation to the Attorney General’s office, and that prior guidance to staff was consistent with guidance later issued by the Texas Education Agency. The district reminded staff not to encourage, endorse, discourage, or attempt to persuade students regarding participation in walkouts or protests.
