Reporting from gaza: The Vital Role of Palestinian Journalists

The ongoing conflict in Gaza has been brought to the world’s attention largely through the courageous work of Palestinian journalists. Restrictions imposed by the Israeli government continue to prevent foreign broadcasters, including major networks like the BBC, from freely reporting from within the territory, even during periods of ceasefire. This reliance on local reporters underscores their indispensable role in providing critical coverage.

For one month, freelance journalist Ghada Al-Kurd has been sharing her experiences with us through voice notes, offering a personal account of life, hope, family, and the realities of reporting from Gaza City. Journalism in Gaza is exceptionally hazardous; nearly 200 journalists have been killed in the region over the past two years. Even with a ceasefire, the threat to their safety remains significant.

Through displacement and hardship, Ghada continues to deliver vital reports, sharing cherished memories of life before the war and articulating her anxieties and aspirations for Gaza’s future. Her work provides a crucial, on-the-ground perspective often unavailable through other channels.
