TikTok Resumes Canadian Sponsorships After Reaching Agreement with Federal Government

TikTok has reached a settlement with the Canadian federal government, allowing it to continue operating in Canada and resume sponsorships of major cultural events. The agreement follows a period of uncertainty where TikTok suspended sponsorships, including those with the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Juno Awards, due to concerns over national security and a potential shutdown of its Canadian operations.

National Security Concerns and Initial Sponsorship Suspension

In November 2024, the federal government ordered TikTok to wind down its Canadian operations, citing national security concerns. This led TikTok Canada to suspend sponsorships of several Canadian arts institutions in July 2025, including TIFF and the Juno Awards, as it prepared to comply with the order. The company had invested millions in programs and partnerships supporting local artists and creators since establishing offices in Toronto and Vancouver.

Terms of the Agreement

The agreement with the federal government ensures TikTok Canada maintains a physical presence in Canada and commits to investing in the Canadian cultural sector. Key commitments include continued support for Canadian content creators, cultural organizations, and training programs, with a particular focus on Francophone and Indigenous creators. The settlement also includes “enhanced” data security measures, a third-party monitor to verify data controls and protections, and initiatives for online safety and digital literacy for young Canadian users.

Resumption of Sponsorships and Support for Canadian Arts

With the agreement in place, TikTok Canada is expected to resume sponsorships and programs supporting Canadian artists, such as creator accelerator and development programs. Whereas specific details regarding which sponsorships will restart and when have not yet been announced, announcements are anticipated. Organizations like MusiCounts, which received $500,000 from TikTok to support high school music programs, are also expected to benefit from the renewed support.

Broader Context: U.S. Deal and Trade Negotiations

This Canadian settlement follows a similar deal in the United States, where TikTok reached an agreement to continue operating through a joint venture with American investors, including Oracle Corporation and Silver Lake. The timing of the Canadian agreement may also be linked to Canada’s decision to scrap a digital service tax on American tech giants in June 2025 to facilitate trade talks with the U.S., amid an ongoing tariff war.

TikTok’s Canadian User Base

As of November 2024, TikTok reported having 14 million active monthly Canadian users.
