Toronto Braces for Messy Mix of Snow, Freezing Rain and Strong Winds
Residents across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are preparing for a challenging weather system bringing snow, freezing rain, and strong winds on Sunday, March 15, 2026. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of hazardous travel conditions.
Snowfall and Freezing Rain Forecast
The system is expected to deliver between 2 to 6 centimetres of snow across the GTA, including areas from Halton Hills to Oshawa. However, snowfall accumulations may vary significantly depending on the development of heavier bands. A risk of freezing rain is also present as temperatures hover near the freezing mark.
The snow and freezing rain threat is anticipated to diminish from south to north later this morning through the afternoon. Despite the improvement, roads may remain slippery as precipitation changes or ends.
Strong Winds and Reduced Visibility
Easterly winds are forecast to gust up to 70 kilometres per hour, potentially reducing visibility in areas with heavier snowfall or localized blowing snow. These gusty conditions may persist into Sunday night and even Monday in some areas. Environment Canada warns of possible localized power outages due to the strong winds.
Temperature Trends
Sunday’s high will be 4°C, but will feel like -12°C with the wind chill. An unusual temperature trend is expected Sunday night, with a forecast of 7°C rising to 9°C by Monday morning. Yahoo News Canada reports this abnormal warming trend.
Travel and Safety Concerns
Travel is expected to be tricky throughout the day. Environment Canada advises residents to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts. Local utility outages are possible. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #ONStorm.
