Toulouse Mayoral Race: Moudenc Seeks Fourth Term Amidst Left-Wing Divisions

As the March 15th and 22nd elections approach, Toulouse is poised for a closely contested mayoral race. Incumbent Jean-Luc Moudenc, seeking a fourth consecutive term, faces challenges from socialist François Briançon and La France Insoumise’s François Piquemal. The potential for a unified left-wing front remains a key factor in determining the outcome.

The Candidates

Ten candidates are officially vying for the position of mayor of Toulouse. Jean-Luc Moudenc, first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2020, is running with the support of center and right-wing parties. He is opposed by François Briançon, representing the Socialist party, and François Piquemal, from La France Insoumise.

The Challenge of Left-Wing Unity

A significant hurdle for the opposition lies in achieving a unified front. While eleven left-wing organizations have reportedly aligned behind François Briançon, a key piece of the puzzle remains absent: La France Insoumise and its candidate, François Piquemal. Jean-Luc Moudenc has publicly called on François Briançon to clarify his position regarding a potential alliance with La France Insoumise.

Carole Delga, president of the Occitanie region and a prominent figure in the Socialist party, has voiced opposition to any alliance with La France Insoumise, citing remarks made by its leader. However, the national office of the PS is considering potential alliances on a “case-by-case” basis.

Strategic Considerations and Potential Alliances

Polls suggest that a merger between the Briançon and Piquemal lists in the second round would be crucial for unseating Moudenc. Piquemal has emphasized the necessity of unity, stating, “Union is the only way to beat the right.” Briançon has requested clarifications from Piquemal, leaving the possibility of a rally open.

Moudenc, meanwhile, warns of the “melenchonization of the city” should a left-wing alliance materialize. He also dismissed allegations of assisting Reconquête! to weaken the Rassemblement National list, as reported by Médiacités and Mediapart.

Toulouse’s Political Landscape

Despite consistently voting left in national and regional elections, Toulouse has been governed by the right for most of the past half-century, with a single period of Socialist leadership under Pierre Cohen. The city’s demographics are rapidly changing, and it is projected to become the third-largest city in France.
