Putin accuses West of escalating Ukraine conflict with arms supplies

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of escalating the conflict in Ukraine by supplying arms to the country. In a televised address on Tuesday, Putin claimed that Western countries are using Ukraine as a tool to weaken Russia.

“They are supplying weapons, and in large quantities. This prolongs the conflict and increases the number of victims,” Putin said. He also warned that any direct military intervention by Western countries in Ukraine would lead to a “global catastrophe.”

The comments come as Ukraine continues to receive military aid from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other European nations. This aid has included advanced weapons systems, such as anti-tank missiles and air defense systems, which have helped Ukraine to resist the Russian invasion.

Putin reiterated his claim that Russia’s military operation in Ukraine is aimed at “demilitarizing” and “denazifying” the country, and protecting Russian-speaking populations. These claims have been widely dismissed by Western governments and international organizations.

The conflict in Ukraine has been ongoing since February 2022, and has resulted in thousands of deaths and millions of refugees. The fighting has been concentrated in eastern and southern Ukraine, but has also spread to other parts of the country.

The international community has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and has imposed a series of sanctions on Russia in an effort to pressure the country to end the conflict. Though, these sanctions have so far failed to achieve their desired effect.

Earth May Have Passed Climate ‘Tipping Point’ – New Report Warns

The extensive report was presented on Monday and comes ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil.Over 100 researchers have contributed.

It is the first time researchers have declared that the earth has probably reached a so -called “rocker point” – a change that can trigger massive and often lasting changes in nature, writes AFP news agency.

“sadly, we are now almost sure that we have passed one of these rocker points for hot water or tropical coral reefs,” says Tim lenton, climate and soil system researcher at the University of Exeter in the UK and the main author of the report.

Norway’s Oil Fund Faces Criticism Over Investment in Companies Linked to Myanmar Junta

Oslo, Norway – Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, is under increasing scrutiny for its continued investments in companies with ties to the military junta in Myanmar. Despite international condemnation of the february 2021 coup and the subsequent violence against civilians, the fund holds substantial shares in businesses that provide financial support to the regime.

Critics argue that these investments indirectly contribute to the junta’s ability to suppress dissent and commit human rights abuses. The fund’s mandate is to manage Norway’s oil wealth for future generations, but it also includes ethical guidelines intended to prevent investments that may cause harm.

“It is deeply concerning that the Oil Fund continues to channel money into companies that are propping up a brutal regime,” says Tiril Skarstein, a researcher at the Norwegian organization, Future in Our Hands. “These investments are not only ethically questionable but also carry notable reputational risks for Norway.”

The fund maintains that it is actively monitoring the situation in Myanmar and has placed several companies under observation. However, it has resisted calls for full divestment, citing the complexity of tracing financial links and the potential for negative consequences for local populations.

“We are following the developments in Myanmar closely and are taking steps to address the ethical concerns,” stated a spokesperson for the fund. “Though, divestment is not always the most effective way to promote positive change. We believe that continued engagement with companies can allow us to exert influence and advocate for responsible business practices.”

This stance has drawn criticism from human rights groups and opposition activists in Myanmar, who argue that engagement with the junta and its affiliated businesses legitimizes the regime and provides it with much-needed financial resources. They are urging the Norwegian government to adopt a stricter approach and fully divest from companies linked to the military.

The controversy surrounding the Oil Fund’s investments in Myanmar highlights the challenges faced by institutional investors seeking to balance financial returns with ethical considerations in complex geopolitical contexts. As the situation in Myanmar continues to deteriorate, pressure is mounting on Norway to take a more decisive stand and align its investment policies with its stated commitment to human rights and democracy.
