Putin accuses West of escalating Ukraine conflict with arms supplies

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the West of escalating the conflict in Ukraine by supplying arms to the country. In a televised address on Tuesday, Putin claimed that Western countries are using Ukraine as a tool to weaken Russia.

“They are supplying weapons, and in large quantities. This prolongs the conflict and increases the number of victims,” Putin said. He also warned that any direct military intervention by Western countries in Ukraine would lead to a “global catastrophe.”

The comments come as Ukraine continues to receive military aid from the United States, the United Kingdom, and other European nations. This aid has included advanced weapons systems, such as anti-tank missiles and air defense systems, which have helped Ukraine to resist the Russian invasion.

“We are following the developments in Myanmar closely and are taking steps to address the ethical concerns,” stated a spokesperson for the fund. “Though, divestment is not always the most effective way to promote positive change. We believe that continued engagement with companies can allow us to exert influence and advocate for responsible business practices.”

This stance has drawn criticism from human rights groups and opposition activists in Myanmar, who argue that engagement with the junta and its affiliated businesses legitimizes the regime and provides it with much-needed financial resources. They are urging the Norwegian government to adopt a stricter approach and fully divest from companies linked to the military.

The controversy surrounding the Oil Fund’s investments in Myanmar highlights the challenges faced by institutional investors seeking to balance financial returns with ethical considerations in complex geopolitical contexts. Korallrevene er i trøbbel – igjen: Nå truer et nytt fenomen

Korallrev verden over er allerede under press fra klimaendringer og forsuring av havet.Nå viser forskning at et nytt fenomen kan forverre situasjonen ytterligere: økende mengder nikkel i havet.

Nikkel er et grunnstoff som naturlig finnes i havbunnen, men menneskelig aktivitet som gruvedrift og industriell utslipp har ført til at konsentrasjonen av nikkel i enkelte havområder har økt betraktelig.

Forskere har nå funnet ut at selv lave konsentrasjoner av nikkel kan være giftig for koraller, og hindre vekst og reproduksjon. Dette kan føre til at korallrev svekkes og blir mer sårbare for andre stressfaktorer, som bleking forårsaket av varmere havtemperaturer.

– Vi har sett at nikkel forstyrrer korallenes evne til å bygge skjelettet sitt, og det påvirker også deres immunforsvar, sier Annika Hammerschlag, forsker ved University of Queensland i Australia, til NTB.

Korallrev er blant de mest artsrike økosystemene på jorden,og er hjem for et utrolig mangfold av marine arter. De er også viktige for kystbeskyttelse, fiskeri og turisme.
