The United States clarified the conditions for taxing $100,000 for work visas widely used in the tech sector on Saturday, following concerns raised by India and potentially affected businesses.
H-1B visas – three-quarters of which are approved for Indian nationals – allow foreign workers with specialized qualifications (like scientists, engineers, and computer programmers) to work in the US. These permits are initially valid for three years and can be extended for another three.
President Donald Trump announced this measure on Friday, alongside the creation of a “golden” residence permit costing a million dollars, a reference to the well-known “green card” which allows people to live and work in the United States. He signed the decrees in the Oval Office.
