Trump Shifts Tone on China after Rare Earths Dispute

US president Donald Trump has adopted a more conciliatory stance towards China. On his social platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Don’t worry about China, everything will be fine! Esteemed President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn’t want a depression for his country, and neither do I. The US wants too help China, not hurt!!!”

This follows a recent escalation in trade tensions. Last week, China announced new export restrictions on rare earths, initiating a new front in the economic conflict with the USA. The United states relies heavily on rare earth trade – a fact China, with its approximately 90 percent global market share, recognizes and has previously leveraged as a point of pressure.

US Trade Representative: “We asked the Chinese for a phone call, but they refused”

Trump initially responded by threatening further tariffs against China. He announced plans for 100 percent tariffs.
