Europe’s First Commercial Robotaxi Service Launches in Zagreb with Uber, Pony.ai, and Verne
Uber is partnering with autonomous driving technology company Pony.ai and Croatian startup Verne to launch Europe’s first commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb, Croatia. Initial testing is underway, with fare-charging services expected to begin soon, integrating directly into the Uber ride-hailing network.
A Three-Way Collaboration
The collaboration divides responsibilities: Pony.ai will provide the autonomous driving system, Verne will act as the fleet owner and service operator, and Uber will integrate the service into its existing ride-hailing platform. This model aims to create a scalable framework for expanding robotaxi services beyond Zagreb to other European cities and potentially other markets, with plans to scale to a fleet of thousands of robotaxis in the coming years.
Technology and Testing
Currently, the companies are validating the technology on Zagreb’s streets using Pony.ai’s Gen-7 autonomous driving system deployed on the Arcfox Alpha T5 Robotaxi. The Arcfox Alpha T5 was jointly developed and manufactured with Beijing Automotive Group Co (BAIC).
Verne’s Role and Background
Verne, which originated as a side project of supercar maker Rimac, will lead the process of ensuring market readiness and obtaining European regulatory approval for the robotaxi launches. Mate Rimac, founder and CEO of Rimac Group, showcased a fleet of 60 prototype autonomous vehicles late last year.
Strategic Implications for Uber
This partnership represents a strategic move by Uber to position itself in the evolving transportation landscape. The company has been actively forming alliances with autonomous vehicle developers to mitigate potential financial impacts from the widespread adoption of robotaxis.
Future Expansion
Following the launch in Zagreb, the companies plan to expand the robotaxi service to additional cities in Europe and beyond. The initial service will be available through Verne’s app, with eventual integration into the Uber service.
