Ukraine legalizes the medicinal use of cannabis to help war victims

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted today a law supported by the President Volodimir Zelensky which legalizes the therapeutic use of cannabis to help the military and civilians suffering from post-traumatic stress caused by the war caused by the Russian invasion.

The law, promoted by deputy Yaroslav Zhelezniak of the centrist opposition party Jolos, had the support of 268 deputies of the Ukrainian Rada, out of a total of 450 seats.

The legal text allows the cultivation, circulation and industrial, scientific and technical use of marijuana when it is intended for cancer treatment and “post-traumatic stress” caused by the war.

In a speech to the Rada on June 28, Zelensky stated that he supported this law so that “all citizens, men and women of Ukraine, do not have to suffer the pain, stress and trauma of war.”

According to Inna Ivanenko of the Ukrainian Patients NGO, “about 4 million people” they may need medical cannabis treatment as a result of the war.
