Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks Resume in Geneva Amidst Military Pressure
Geneva, Switzerland – A Ukrainian delegation, led by Chief of Staff Kyrylo Budanov, has arrived in Geneva for another round of negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia. The talks, set to initiate on Monday, February 16, 2026, are taking place against a backdrop of escalating military pressure from both sides.
Trilateral Negotiations with U.S. Involvement
These negotiations represent the third round of trilateral talks involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Previous rounds were held in the United Arab Emirates in January and early February, marking the first direct public discussions between Moscow and Kyiv on a peace plan proposed by the Trump administration. Russia will be represented by Kremlin advisor and chief peace negotiator Vladimir Medinsky.
Previous Talks and Current Obstacles
Whereas both Russia and Ukraine have described the previous rounds of talks as constructive, no significant breakthroughs have been achieved. A key point of contention remains Russia’s demand for Ukraine to withdraw its troops from the partially occupied Donbas region, a demand that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected. The United States has reportedly been urging Ukraine to reach a peace agreement with Moscow, and has indicated that finalizing security guarantees is contingent upon a peace deal.
Zelenskyy’s Hopes and Concerns
President Zelenskyy expressed hope that the Geneva talks would be “serious, substantive,” and “helpful,” but acknowledged that the sides sometimes appear to be discussing fundamentally different issues.
Switzerland’s Support for Ukraine
As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine approaches, Switzerland continues to support Ukraine.
Recent Developments
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that peace talks in Geneva were “probably the most productive and meaningful meeting” held so far in the process. Discussions are focused on a contentious American peace plan, with adjustments being made to potentially reach an outcome acceptable to both Ukraine and the United States.
