Ukraine Aids U.S. Defense Against Iran, Securing Aid in Return
As the conflict between the U.S. And Israel with Iran escalates, Ukraine is playing a crucial role in defending U.S. Military bases in the Middle East against Iranian drones. This assistance, which includes interceptor drones and a team of Ukrainian drone experts, is being provided in exchange for increased U.S. Aid to Ukraine, particularly Patriot air defense systems.
Ukraine’s Role in Middle East Defense
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine is assisting in the protection of U.S. Military bases in Jordan. This deployment comes as Iran has been launching drone strikes against Gulf countries and has threatened the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for oil transport.
A Reciprocal Agreement
The U.S. Initially requested Ukraine’s assistance in defending its Gulf allies against Iranian drones. Zelenskyy stated he authorized providing the necessary resources and expertise, but conditioned this support on receiving additional aid for Ukraine’s own defense. Specifically, Ukraine is seeking more U.S. Patriot air defense systems to counter Russian ballistic missiles.
U.S. President Donald Trump indicated a willingness to accept assistance from Ukraine, stating, “I’ll take any assistance from any country.”
Impact of the Iran Conflict on Ukraine
The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran is diverting military and diplomatic resources away from the four-year-long war in Ukraine. Peace talks scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi have been stalled due to the ongoing conflict in the region. The increased oil prices, hovering around $100 (€87) a barrel, too benefit Russia’s war effort.
Drone Production Deal
Zelenskyy has also been pressing the White House for a “big drone production deal” that would allow Ukraine to not only defend itself but also assist the U.S. And Gulf partners in countering Iranian drones. This potential agreement highlights Ukraine’s growing capabilities in drone technology and its willingness to leverage those capabilities for mutual benefit.
Zelenskyy’s Diplomatic Efforts
Amidst these developments, Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss increasing pressure on Moscow by targeting its “shadow fleet” of oil tankers operating in breach of sanctions. The French presidency affirmed that support for Ukraine would not waver despite the unfolding crisis in the Middle East.
Zelenskyy has also engaged with counterparts in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan and Kuwait, promising “concrete steps” to support defend their infrastructure from Iranian attacks.
