Ukraine Seeks Middle East Support, Negotiates Aid Amid Iran Tensions
Ukraine is actively seeking support from the Gulf region, dispatching a delegation led by Secretary of the National Defense and Security Council Rustem Umerov, alongside military officials, to negotiate mutual assistance. This move comes as regional instability rises due to attacks from Iran and concerns over potential disruptions to global oil and gas supplies.
Seeking Stability and Reciprocal Aid
According to a statement released on March 10, 2026, by President Zelensky, the Ukrainian delegation aims to secure assistance in protecting lives and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East. Ukraine is positioning itself to offer expertise in countering drone attacks – a capability developed through its own defense efforts – in exchange for continued support for its own defense, particularly air defense systems.
Iran’s Impact on Global Supply Chains
President Zelensky highlighted Iran’s actions, stating that the Iranian regime has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil and gas transportation. This disruption is considered a significant destabilizing factor with potential worldwide economic consequences.
Drone Expertise as a Trade Asset
Ukraine is proposing a collaborative agreement, similar to a previously proposed deal with the United States, focused on drone technology. Ukraine believes its extensive experience in countering drone attacks – described as “the world’s largest experience” – is invaluable to the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. The country aims to leverage this expertise through joint production and application of drone technology.
Negotiations and Future Agreements
Umerov, working with the military, intelligence services, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is tasked with preparing specific agreements to ensure that countries seeking Ukrainian support also provide assistance in return. The details of these potential agreements remain under development.
