The United Nations has issued a strong statement urging Iranian authorities to exercise restraint and protect the rights of citizens amidst ongoing protests that have gripped the nation. The protests, which began on December 28th, were initially sparked by a notable collapse of Iran’s national currency, the rial, and have since escalated, spreading to at least 46 cities across the country.
“all Iranians must be able to express their grievances peacefully and without fear,” stated a spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Sunday, as outlined in an official statement. The UN emphasized that the rights to freedom of expression, association, and peaceful assembly – fundamental principles of international law – must be fully respected and protected.
The Secretary-General specifically called on Iranian authorities to refrain from the unnecessary or disproportionate use of force against protestors. This appeal comes as reports indicate dozens of people, including at least five children, have been killed and many more injured during the demonstrations. Iranian parliament has also acknowledged fatalities among security forces.
A particularly concerning aspect of the situation is the severe restriction of access to information. On the evening of January 8th, Iranian authorities implemented a widespread shutdown of internet and mobile connectivity, effectively creating an information blackout as violence intensified. The UN has urged the restoration of communications to allow for the free flow of information and to facilitate peaceful expression.
The current unrest represents a significant challenge to the Iranian government and raises concerns about human rights and political stability within the country. The UN’s call for restraint and respect for fundamental freedoms underscores the international community’s attention to the unfolding events in Iran.
