Escalating Middle East Conflict Displaces Hundreds of Thousands, Threatens Humanitarian Crisis
As military fighting intensifies across the Middle East, the United Nations is mobilizing a large-scale humanitarian response to address the growing needs of civilians caught in the crossfire. The conflict, sparked by US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks, is triggering widespread displacement and exacerbating existing vulnerabilities.
Regional Displacement Soars
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), over 330,000 people have been forcibly displaced in recent days, primarily within their own countries. Lebanon is experiencing a significant influx of displaced persons, with nearly 84,000 seeking shelter in over 400 collective sites. Within Iran, more than 1.6 million refugees, largely from Afghanistan, have been displaced. Fighting along the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan has led to the displacement of nearly 118,000 people in both nations.
UN Mobilizes Humanitarian Aid
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher has described the situation as a “moment of great peril,” highlighting the “increased linkages” between these humanitarian crises. OCHA is fully mobilized across the region, deploying humanitarian teams and supplies to affected areas. Assistance includes food, aid, and shelter for thousands of civilians.
Impact on Children
The conflict is taking a devastating toll on children. In Lebanon, seven children have been killed and 38 injured due to the escalation of hostilities. UNICEF reports that approximately 180 children have been killed in airstrikes in Iran while at school, calling it a “stark reminder of the brutality of war and violence” on children.
Disrupted Supply Chains and Global Economic Concerns
Fletcher warned of far-reaching consequences, including disruptions to global markets and supply chains. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for oil and natural gas exports, has experienced a near-total halt in traffic due to strikes, causing global gas and oil prices to surge. This will likely strain public services, increase food prices, and hinder humanitarian operations.
Diversion of Resources and Ongoing Crises
The focus on the Middle East crisis raises concerns about diverting attention and resources from other ongoing humanitarian emergencies in regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, and Ukraine.
Challenges to Humanitarian Operations
Ongoing missile airstrikes have disrupted airspace, forcing the postponement or cancellation of commercial flights and impacting the movement of humanitarian supplies and personnel. OCHA is pre-positioning supplies and identifying alternate routes to ensure aid reaches those in need.
Regional Instability and Potential for Escalation
Reports indicate potential for the conflict to extend beyond the Middle East, with incidents involving Turkish airspace and accusations of Iranian drone attacks in Azerbaijan. UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric emphasized the critical need to prevent further escalation and the involvement of additional countries.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged a cessation of hostilities and a return to diplomatic negotiations, warning that the situation “could spiral beyond anyone’s control.”
