American Airlines Tests New Tech to Curb Boarding Line Cutting

American Airlines is stepping up its game in the boarding process with a new technology designed to stop passengers from cutting the line. Currently undergoing a trial phase at three airports across the country, the system aims to create a smoother and more organized boarding experience for everyone.

How Does It Work?

The technology, deployed at Albuquerque International Sunport Airport in New Mexico, Tucson International Airport in Arizona, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Crystal City, Virginia, utilizes an audible alert system. When a passenger attempts to scan their ticket ahead of their assigned boarding group, the gate agent is immediately notified by a sound.

“The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team,” said American Airlines in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Polite Enforcement

Equipped with this new system, gate agents can politely inform passengers who try to breach the line that they need to rejoin the queue when their group is called. For those who may be allowed to board out of order, such as passengers traveling with a companion of a higher status, agents have a quick and easy way to override the alert and process their boarding.

Positive Initial Results

Although still in its testing phase, American Airlines has reported positive initial results from the implementation of the new technology. The airline intends to evaluate the effectiveness of the system at the three airports before considering a wider rollout.
