Table of Contents

Following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka region on September 18, 2025, the National Weather Service (NWS) Tsunami Warning Center has issued an “all clear” for the U.S. West Coast, including Hawaii. While a tsunami advisory remains in effect for the Aleutian Islands off the Alaskan Peninsula, there is no current threat of significant tsunami activity for the continental United States.

Earthquake Details

The earthquake struck at approximately 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (PST), roughly 80 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, at a depth of six miles. https://earthquake.usgs.gov/ provides real-time earthquake information and analysis. This region is seismically active, and was previously impacted by a significant 8.8 magnitude earthquake in late July 2025.

tsunami Advisory vs. Warning: Understanding the Difference

It’s important to understand the distinction between a tsunami advisory and a tsunami warning. According to the National oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

* Tsunami Advisory: Indicates a potential for strong currents and waves dangerous to those in or near the water. Individuals in an advisory area should get out of the water, off beaches, and away from harbors, marinas, and inlets. https://www.noaa.gov/education/resource-collections/ocean-coasts/tsunamis

* Tsunami Warning: Means a dangerous tsunami is imminent or expected. evacuation of coastal areas is recommended.

Current Status & Regional Impacts

Hawaii was briefly under a tsunami threat, but that threat was lifted around 1:50 PM PST. The tsunami advisory remains in effect for the Aleutian Islands, where stronger wave activity is absolutely possible. Residents of the Aleutian Islands should heed the advice of local authorities and remain vigilant.

Ongoing Monitoring & Updates

This is a developing situation. The NWS Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates as necessary. For the latest information, please refer to the following resources:
