Vacaville High School Advances to Semifinals After Thrilling Penalty Shootout Victory
The Vacaville High School girls soccer team secured a hard-fought 7-6 penalty shootout win over Whitney High School on Monday, advancing to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals. The game followed a 1-1 tie after two 10-minute overtime periods.
Game Highlights
Sofia Botine gave Vacaville an early lead in the 37th minute with a shot that deflected off a Whitney defender. However, Whitney equalized in the 75th minute with a 30-yard free kick from Nina Souto. Despite several promising chances, including a shot from Lilyanna Olmedo that hit the post, Vacaville couldn’t secure a move-ahead goal in regulation or overtime.
Penalty Shootout Drama
The match ultimately came down to a penalty shootout. Vacaville goalkeeper Reese Fisher made a crucial save against Whitney’s Addyson Webb, keeping the score tied at 6-6. Junior defender Makayla Adams then stepped up and calmly drilled her penalty kick into the top right corner, securing the victory for the Bulldogs. Adams admitted to feeling stressed before the kick, noting she didn’t know she would be taking it until shortly before.
Strategic Advantage in Semifinals
Vacaville will now host Rio Americano in the semifinals on Wednesday. This change in venue is due to an upset victory by No. 9 Rio Americano over No. 1 Tracy. Vacaville previously defeated Rio Americano 3-1 on December 12. Head coach Jen Eggley expressed delight at hosting, stating, “I’ve already canceled the bus.”
Defensive Strength and Teamwork
The Vacaville defense, led by seniors Emma and Kallie Stacey, proved formidable throughout the game, shutting down Whitney’s attacks. Coach Eggley praised the team’s unity, stating, “They kept fighting for each other and they put their teammates first. They’ve got a really good bond.”
