Lando Norris Claims Pole Position in Dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix Qualifying

Lando Norris secured pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix after a chaotic qualifying session marked by five crashes, leaving reigning champion Max Verstappen facing a difficult 17th-place start.

A wet track and unpredictable conditions created a thrilling spectacle, with several drivers finding themselves off track throughout the session. Williams duo Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso all triggered red flags, adding to the drama.

Max Verstappen’s hopes of securing pole position were dashed when Stroll’s crash at the end of Q2 halted the session. Verstappen, poised for a fast lap, was unable to improve his position, leaving him 12th quickest. Adding to his woes, Verstappen’s RB20 requires a new internal combustion engine, resulting in a five-place grid penalty, pushing him further down to 17th.

Hamilton Shocker: Early Exit for Seven-Time Champion

Qualifying began earlier than usual, commencing at 7:30 AM local time, with rain persisting throughout the morning. While conditions improved slightly, several drivers, including Liam Lawson, Zhou Guanyu, and Stroll, encountered minor offs.

Lewis Hamilton faced a tense battle to avoid elimination in Q1, ultimately finishing 15th, narrowly ahead of eliminated drivers Oliver Bearman, Nico Hulkenberg, and Zhou.

Norris, meanwhile, survived the early eliminations, securing 15th position, but faced pressure to improve in Q2.

Q2 saw Oscar Piastri gamble on intermediate tires, setting the early pace. Sainz briefly took the lead, but Verstappen quickly shattered the benchmark. However, a crash by Sainz brought out the red flags, impacting Norris’s chances.

A third red flag, triggered by Stroll’s crash, ended Verstappen’s hopes of progressing. Norris, however, led the session at the time of the stoppage.

A fourth red flag, caused by Alonso’s crash, further disrupted Q3. Despite Albon’s heavy shunt, Norris held onto pole position, finishing ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell.

Yuki Tsunoda secured third place, followed by Esteban Ocon, Liam Lawson, Charles Leclerc, Alex Albon, Oscar Piastri, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll.
