Viareggio Carnival 2026: A Celebration of Floats, Satire, and Tuscan Culture
Viareggio, Italy, is gearing up for its 153rd edition of the Carnevale di Viareggio, running from February 1st to February 21st, 2026. This internationally renowned festival transforms the Tuscan coastline into a vibrant spectacle of giant papier-mâché floats, masked parades, and lively celebrations.
A Tradition Rooted in History
The Viareggio Carnival dates back to 1873, beginning as a parade of decorated carriages organized by local youth. Over the decades, it has evolved into a major cultural event, celebrated for its monumental floats and satirical themes. The carnival offers a unique winter experience in Tuscany, attracting visitors with fewer crowds than the summer months and a contagious energy.
The Spectacle of the Floats
The heart of the Viareggio Carnival lies in its elaborate floats. Constructed from papier-mâché by local workshops, these creations combine artistry, complex mechanical movement, and sharp social commentary. For the 2026 edition, the carnival will feature nine first-category floats, four second-category floats, eight group masquerades, and eight individual masks.
Some of the featured first-category floats include:
- Nel campo dei miracoli – Jacopo Allegrucci
- La gallina dalle uova d’oro – Alessandro Avanzini
- In bocca al lupo – Luca Bertozzi
- I samurai del potere – Luigi Bonetti
- The Last Hop(e). Il cambiamento climatico è una bufala – Massimo and Alessandro Breschi
- Nemmeno con un fiore – Umberto, Stefano, Michele and Jacopo Cinquini
- Gran Casino
2026 Parade Schedule
The carnival will host six masked parades (corsi mascherati) throughout February, including both daytime and nighttime events. The schedule is as follows:

All parades will take place along Viareggio’s seafront promenade.
Beyond the Parades
The spirit of the Viareggio Carnival extends beyond the parades themselves. Visitors can explore museums and exhibitions dedicated to the carnival’s history and artistry throughout the year. On February 15th, the fourth masked course was accompanied by a kite display, featuring kite flyers from Livorno, Gubbio, and Treviso.
