Sara Grilli to Run for Viareggio Mayor as Civic Candidate Amidst Center-Right Uncertainty
Viareggio, Italy – Sara Grilli, the current councilor responsible for social policies, has emerged as the leading candidate for mayor of Viareggio, backed by a coalition of civic groups. This development follows weeks of negotiations and internal disagreements among political factions vying for control of the Tuscan coastal city. Even as Grilli has secured the support of the Area Civica, the involvement of the broader center-right alliance remains uncertain, with parties considering foregoing their individual symbols in favor of a unified list.
A Shift from Tomei and a History of Civic Alliances
The shift in support towards Grilli reflects a desire for a more centrist figure to lead Viareggio. Initial consideration had been given to current Vice Mayor Gabriele Tomei, but concerns about his political alignment – deemed too left-leaning by some within the potential governing alliance – led to a change in direction. Grilli and Tomei were previously rivals for the candidacy.
This election builds upon a history of civic alliances in Viareggio. Grilli and former Vice Mayor Dem Maineri previously collaborated to support Giorgio Del Ghingaro’s re-election bid in 2020, but their alliance fractured in 2022 with Maineri’s removal from office. This past dynamic adds complexity to the current race, as Grilli and Maineri now compete for the same electorate.
Del Ghingaro’s Endorsement and Grilli’s Platform
Outgoing Mayor Giorgio Del Ghingaro has publicly endorsed Grilli, stating, “Sara will be our tomorrow. And a good mayor, I am certain.” Del Ghingaro emphasized a desire for continuity and innovation in Viareggio’s governance.
Grilli, a 44-year-old lawyer elected to the city council in 2020, served as the assessor for welfare starting in 2022, following Maineri’s dismissal. She has outlined four key pillars for her potential administration: growing the city through tourism and innovation, strengthening socio-health and educational services, fostering active neighborhood participation, and ensuring a responsive and listening city government.
Center-Right Support in Question
Despite the civic endorsement, the participation of the center-right parties – Fratelli d’Italia, Forza Italia, and Lega – remains unclear. Representatives from these parties were notably absent from the official announcement of Grilli’s candidacy at the Principino, suggesting ongoing negotiations regarding a potential alliance. The final decision on whether to support Grilli with a unified list rests with the national leadership of these parties.
Grilli has stated that the Area Civica aims to present an “open civic project” rather than a traditional party-based platform, welcoming diverse political sensitivities as long as there is agreement on a shared program and working method.
Election Timeline
The mayoral election in Viareggio is scheduled to take place on May 24 and 25. Grilli is expected to present her full administrative program and list of supporting parties within the next ten days.
