Vietnam Weather Forecast: Heavy Rains and Maritime Warnings Issued for July 2024
Meteorological authorities in Vietnam have issued warnings for widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across the northern, central, and southern regions as of mid-July 2024. Localized downpours exceeding 70 mm to 100 mm are expected in specific areas, bringing significant risks of flash floods, landslides, and infrastructure damage. These weather patterns are accompanied by hazardous conditions at sea, particularly in the South China Sea, where strong winds and high waves are currently impacting maritime operations.
Regional Rainfall and Storm Hazards
The current weather disturbance is characterized by scattered thunderstorms, with intensity peaking during the early morning, late afternoon, and nighttime hours. In the northern region, including areas near Thanh Hoa, rainfall is generally ranging between 10 and 30 mm, with localized spots receiving over 70 mm. The stretch between Thanh Hoa and Quang Tri faces more severe conditions, with some areas recording precipitation levels exceeding 100 mm.

The meteorological agency warns that these storms carry a high probability of severe weather phenomena, including:
- Tornadoes and lightning strikes.
- Strong wind gusts capable of downing trees.
- Damage to agricultural crops and residential structures.
- Flash floods in small rivers and urban inundation in low-lying areas.
Maritime Conditions and Safety Advisories
Maritime operations are currently navigating dangerous conditions. East of the Phu Quy Special Economic Zone, authorities have recorded southwesterly winds at force 6, with gusts reaching force 7 to 8. The Huyen Tran weather station reported wind gusts as high as force 8.
For the remainder of the period, the zone stretching from Gia Lai to Ca Mau, including the Spratly Islands (Truong Sa), is under a wind advisory. Forecasts indicate persistent southwesterly winds at force 6, occasionally reaching force 7, with gusts up to force 8 or 9. Sea conditions are described as rough, with wave heights expected to reach 2 to 4 meters in the central sections of the sea. Vessels operating in these waters are advised to adopt proactive safety measures to mitigate risks associated with high swells and sudden thunderstorms.
Temperature Trends and Local Forecasts
While heavy rain dominates many regions, some areas continue to experience heat. In the coastal regions of the south-central provinces, temperatures are reaching highs of 32–35 °C, with some locations exceeding 35 °C. Conversely, mountain regions in the north and the Central Highlands are seeing lower temperatures, with minima dropping to 20–23 °C in some elevated areas.

In major urban centers, the forecast is as follows:
- Hanoi: Cloudy with occasional thunderstorms, primarily in the late afternoon and evening. Temperatures range from 26–34 °C.
- Ho Chi Minh City: Cloudy with scattered thunderstorms and localized heavy rain, mainly in the afternoon and evening. Temperatures range from 25–34 °C.
Diplomatic Context: Vietnam-U.S. Cooperation
Amidst ongoing environmental challenges, Vietnam continues to focus on its international partnerships. During a ceremony commemorating the 250th anniversary of U.S. Independence held in Hanoi on July 8, Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung emphasized the importance of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The government aims to deepen cooperation with the United States in sectors including technology, digital transformation, and innovation to ensure stable and effective long-term growth.
