For aspiring musicians, the path to a career in the music industry often feels shrouded in mystery and fraught with potential pitfalls. This is the story of one such musician, a drummer from Loudoun County, Virginia, who leveraged a specialized program to land a coveted spot on this summer’s Vans Warped tour.
Navigating the Complexities of the Modern Music Landscape
The music industry has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. Streaming services now dominate music consumption, accounting for 84% of total revenue in 2023 according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). This shift, coupled with the rise of self-reliant artists and the increasing importance of direct-to-fan engagement, demands a new skillset beyond musical talent.
“I learned,basically,how to not get screwed over in the music industry,” explains the drummer,who plays for the band Ringpop!. “A lot of artists and bands see a lot of money on a sheet of paper and they are very quick to sign it, because it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve never seen that much.'” This sentiment highlights a critical need for artists to understand contracts, royalties, and the intricacies of music law.
The Benefits of Specialized Music Business programs
The drummer’s journey began with enrollment in the Berklee Performance and Management Institute (BPMI) program. Unlike customary music conservatories focused solely on performance, BPMI integrates practical training in areas like marketing, finance, digital presence, and legal considerations. This holistic approach equips students with the tools to not only create music but also to build sustainable careers.
The program’s emphasis on real-world submission proved invaluable. As part of the curriculum, students and instructors provide constructive criticism on rehearsals and performances, fostering continuous improvement. “It was super helpful,” he said. Moreover, the program instilled a resilience to technical difficulties. “You just have to stop for a second and breathe, and just play the show.” This ability to adapt and remain composed under pressure is a crucial skill for any touring musician.
From Local Venues to the Warped Tour Dream
Ringpop! had already established a local following, playing shows at D.C. clubs like DC9 and Pie Shop. Tho, the prospect to perform on the Vans Warped Tour – a legendary traveling festival known for launching the careers of countless punk and alternative bands – represented a notable leap forward. The tour, revived this year after a hiatus, held a special significance for the drummer, who grew up watching videos of past Warped Tour performances. Founder Kevin Lyman’s decision to bring back the festival, with stops in D.C.on June 13th and 14th, felt like a full-circle moment.
“It was awesome – I can’t put it in any other words than just like a dream come true,” he shared. The transition from intimate club settings to the scale of the Warped Tour was understandably daunting. “It was a little nerve wracking, jumping from playing in front of 20 or 30 people, and then playing in front of a lot – I can’t count.” He confessed to experiencing stage fright, a common challenge for performers, and finding comfort in his role as the drummer, positioned at the back of the stage.
Looking ahead: Continued Momentum for Ringpop!
The band’s success on the Warped tour is just the beginning. Ringpop! is scheduled to continue the tour with dates in Long Beach, California (July 26th and 27th) and Orlando, Florida (November 15th and 16th). This experience, combined with the knowledge gained from BPMI, positions Ringpop! for continued growth and success in the competitive music industry. The drummer’s story serves as an inspiring example of how strategic education and a proactive approach can empower artists to navigate the complexities of the modern music landscape and achieve their dreams.
