A Casual Quip at the Nixon Library
Vice President JD Vance drew a sharp contrast between pop culture and theology during a June 25 book discussion at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. While promoting his book, Communion, Vance jokingly identified Diddy as a “great Christian theologian.”
The remark served as an unlikely bridge into a deeper conversation about the personal challenges inherent in wealth and public recognition.
Channeling the Notorious B.I.G.
The comment stemmed from a chapter in Vance’s book titled, “More Money, More Problems.” The title pays homage to the 1997 hit “Mo Money Mo Problems” by The Notorious B.I.G.

“I’m a millennial and so I believe that’s, uh, that’s the wisdom of the great Christian theologian P. Diddy,” Vance told the audience. He quickly pivoted from the joke, adding, “Who, as we found out over the last couple years, is very much not a Christian or a theologian.”
From Materialism to Faith
Vance used the cultural reference to frame his own trajectory. He explained that in his younger years, he fixated on financial success and professional prestige. As his income and public profile climbed, however, he found his life grew increasingly tangled. He eventually turned to faith and family to find clarity.
The Legal Reality of Diddy
Diddy is currently serving a 50-month federal prison stint after being found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution last July. In March, 40 days were removed from the sentence, which pushed his release date up to April 25, 2028.
The Context of the Public Appearances
The event at the Nixon Library was part of a broader series of appearances by the Vice President intended to promote his writing and chart his ideological journey into national politics. The discussion highlighted a recurring theme in his public life.
