South Korea Ends 17-Year WBC First-Game Jinx with 11-4 Victory Over Czech Republic

Tokyo, Japan – South Korea’s national baseball team, managed by Ryu Ji-hyun, defeated the Czech Republic 11-4 in their opening game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) on March 5th at the Tokyo Dome. This victory marks the end of a 17-year drought for South Korea, who hadn’t won their first game in the WBC since 2009.

Dominant Offensive Performance

Team Korea showcased a powerful offensive display, highlighted by four home runs. Moon Bo-kyung of the LG Twins led the charge, going 2 for 3 with five RBIs, including a grand slam in the first inning. Korean American Shea Whitcomb (Houston Astros) similarly contributed significantly, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs, going 2 for 4. Jeremiah Jones (Detroit Tigers) added another home run to the tally. Lee Jung-hoo (San Francisco Giants) also had a strong showing, going 2 for 4.

Pitching and Team Effort

Starter So Hyeong-jun (KT Wiz) delivered a solid performance, pitching three scoreless innings and allowing four hits. The bullpen followed suit, with Noh Kyung-eun (SSG Landers), Jeong Woo-joo (Hanwha Eagles), Park Young-hyun (KT), Jo Byeong-hyeon (SSG), Kim Young-gyu (NC Dinos), and Yoo Young-chan (LG Twins) each pitching one inning in relief. Seven of the nine starters recorded hits.

Looking Ahead

South Korea aims to advance to the quarterfinals, a feat they haven’t achieved since 2009, having failed to progress past the group stage in the 2013, 2017, and 2023 tournaments. Their next challenge is a highly anticipated match against Japan on March 7th at the Tokyo Dome. Following the Japan game, South Korea will face Taiwan on March 8th and Australia on March 9th.
