Don’t Click That Link: The Orange Anniversary Scam is Spreading

Conakry, December 12 – You get a message on WhatsApp that sounds too good to be true:

“I just received the bonus!” It’s real! You absolutely have to try!” It’s followed by a suspicious link promising a “37th anniversary gift” from Orange, offering bonus data, credit, or free money.

But don’t fall for it. This is a well-crafted scam designed to steal your money and compromise your personal facts. Our fact-checking team analyzed this link and here’s why it’s risky.

How the Scam Works: A Fake Orange Promotion

The link leads to a website hosted on “tnhyd.buzz,” a recently registered and suspicious domain with no legitimate connection to Orange Money or the telecom operator in Guinea.

The page looks like an official offer. It boasts a “37th anniversary gift” with bright colors and urgent calls to action. Though, a closer look reveals minimal content – a common tactic for phishing pages that load slowly to mask their true nature.

To “validate” your bonus, the site asks for sensitive information: your phone number, Orange Money PIN, or even a “verification” transfer via mobile money. Provide this, and scammers will drain your account. Even worse, clicking the link can install malware on your device, leading to identity theft or unwanted paid subscriptions.

This isn’t a new trick. For months, Orange users in West Africa have reported surprise subscriptions to services like “Top Buzz.” Don’t become another victim.
