Baggage System Issues Cause Delays at Oslo Airport

Oslo Airport (Gardermoen) is experiencing delays Monday morning due to problems with its baggage handling system. The issues are occurring during the morning rush and coincide with the winter holiday travel period, potentially impacting passengers.

Baggage Facility Malfunction

According to Carita Storm Røsaasen, press officer at Avinor, one of the airport’s two baggage facilities is not functioning fully. This necessitates manual transfer of luggage, leading to increased processing times. “We have challenges with parts of our baggage facility. We have two facilities, one does not fully cooperate, so they have to move the luggage to the other part of the facility, so people have to calculate increased time,” Røsaasen stated to VG.

Impact on Flights and Passengers

Although the problems began around 8:00 AM on Monday, Avinor expresses confidence in resolving the situation. Passengers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys. Norwegian airline reports that its flights have not been delayed as a result of the baggage system issues. “Passengers are asked to show up as normal,” said Satha Sritharan, press officer for Norwegian, to VG. SAS is currently investigating the matter.

Winter Holiday Travel Surge

The disruptions come as Oslo Airport anticipates a significant increase in passenger traffic over the next few weeks, with approximately 2.1 million Norwegians expected to travel. Airport director Thorgeir Landevaag previously warned of potential congestion due to the winter holidays and increased special luggage volume. “On the busiest day, we approach 90,000 passengers at Oslo Airport alone. We know that winter holidays indicate a lot of special luggage, so the advice is to put in a little extra time on the biggest departure days in the winter holiday weeks,” Landevaag said in a press release last week.

Recent Disruptions at Oslo Airport

These baggage handling issues follow recent disruptions at Oslo Airport. In late September 2025, all air traffic was temporarily halted due to drone sightings, forcing the redirection of numerous flights [VG]. Similar incidents occurred in Copenhagen around the same time [Times Now].
