Bridgestone Focuses on EV Tire Technology as Indonesian Market Grows
Jakarta – Bridgestone Indonesia is ramping up production of tires specifically designed for electric vehicles (EVs) to meet the increasing demand in the Indonesian market. The company is implementing new “sponge technology” at its Karawang, West Java plant, focusing on models most popular with Indonesian consumers.
Growing Demand for EV Tires
According to Mukiat Sutikno, President Director of Bridgestone Indonesia, the rising popularity of EVs in Indonesia is driving the need for tires that prioritize both durability and driving comfort. Demand for electric vehicles is steadily increasing, prompting Bridgestone to provide cutting-edge tire technology.
Key Differences in EV Tire Design
Sutikno explained that EV tires differ significantly from those designed for gasoline or hybrid vehicles. EV tires must be stronger to support the weight of the battery packs. The heavier weight of EVs necessitates a tire with a stronger structure, particularly in the sidewall, to prevent damage.
“If the sidewall side is not strong enough, the tire could break,” Sutikno cautioned. He added that Bridgestone’s ENLITEN technology, featured in models like the Turanza 6, is “EV ready.”
Production and Export Growth
Bridgestone Indonesia experienced a 5% increase in sales in 2025 compared to 2024. Sales increased by around 5 percent, particularly in the passenger tire replacement market. The company’s exports also saw a significant rise, driven by the production of 20-inch tires at the Karawang facility for export to the American market.
“Even though global conditions are not yet extremely great, demand for tires itself will increase in 2025,” Sutikno stated.
Market Outlook
Bridgestone projects that the EV market share in Indonesia could reach 20% in the coming years, up from 14-15% last year. The company anticipates a potential market share of 20 percent, though this growth is dependent on government incentives.
Bridgestone emphasizes that despite focusing on innovation, tire durability and safety remain top priorities, with all products meeting national and international standards, including SNI, and JIS.
