Peer Support in Mental Healthcare: A Growing Movement in Vaucluse, France
Peer support, rooted in the shared experiences of individuals navigating mental health challenges, is gaining prominence as a valuable component of comprehensive care. This approach emphasizes mutual aid, empowerment, and the transformative power of connecting with others who understand. In Vaucluse, France, initiatives like those led by Eric Joly and Michel Dugnat are bringing this model to life, offering crucial support to individuals and families affected by mental illness.
What is Peer Support?
Peer support is based on the understanding that individuals with lived experience of mental health conditions can uniquely support one another. It encompasses a range of activities, including participation in support groups, mutual aid meetings, and the integration of peer support specialists into traditional healthcare settings. The core principles revolve around sharing experiences, fostering hope, and empowering individuals to take control of their recovery journey.
Chime in Vaucluse: A Local Initiative
In Carpentras, Vaucluse, Eric Joly, president, and Michel Dugnat, a member of “Chime” (Contact, Hope, Identity, Meaning, Empowerment), are dedicated to providing peer support to individuals facing psychiatric challenges. Chime aims to help psychiatric users with advice and expertise to aid in their recovery.
Chime’s Projects
Chime is currently focused on a triple project:
- Creating a “living book festival” in collaboration with a general bookstore, featuring testimonies from individuals with psychological disorders. These individuals will serve as volunteers or employees of the bookstore.
- Establishing a presence of peer support within the community.
- Developing additional initiatives to support individuals on their path to recovery.
Groupes d’information des familles (GIF) – Family Information Groups

These groups provide a platform for families to connect with healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists from the Montfavet hospital (Dr. El Ouahchi), healthcare staff (M. Guibaud), and the deputy director responsible for user relations (Mme Balthazard). Meetings occur approximately every two months, on Tuesdays from 5 PM to 7 PM, and address pre-defined topics, sometimes inviting experts to share their knowledge.
