Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow Supports Fire Crews Melting Drake’s ‘Iceman’ Ice Sculpture Amid Safety Concerns

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow publicly endorsed the decision by Toronto Fire Services to dismantle Drake’s large ice sculpture promoting his upcoming album “Iceman” after growing safety concerns drew crowds attempting to melt the structure using dangerous methods.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a council meeting on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Chow stated she supports Fire Chief Jim Jessop’s actions, emphasizing that public safety is the top priority.

“The fire chief made the decision last night, and I support his decisions. His responsibility is people’s safety,” Chow told reporters. “Folks climbed it. I seen them doing all types of things. It is our responsibility to make sure people are safe.”

The ice sculpture, installed in a private parking lot at Bond Street and Dundas Street East, had attracted thousands of fans eager to uncover clues about the release date of Drake’s anticipated “Iceman” album. Some individuals resorted to using flammable liquids, open flames, sledgehammers, and other hazardous methods in attempts to break down the ice.

In response to multiple complaints and observed unsafe activities, Chief Jessop issued a statement Tuesday evening initiating measures under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act. He cited “immediate threat to life” from gatherings using uncontrolled flames and flammable substances near the structure.

Toronto Fire Services began hosing down the sculpture with warm water early Wednesday morning using an aerial fire truck. Video footage captured water pooling on Dundas Street East as police and fire crews maintained a perimeter to keep onlookers at a safe distance.

While the mayor acknowledged Drake’s support for the city, she stressed that public safety must come first, even when high-profile promotions draw large crowds.

The ongoing effort to melt the ice sculpture reflects the city’s commitment to preventing potential injuries or fires resulting from unsanctioned public interactions with the art installation.
