Meta’s Always-On AI Glasses Prototype Sparks Privacy Fears
Meta is developing prototype “super sensing” smart glasses capable of recording audio and images every few seconds, according to the Financial Times. The devices would process metadata on Meta’s servers, avoiding raw data storage.
The ‘Super Sensing’ Mechanism Unveiled
The glasses would extract metadata from captured data and upload it to Meta’s servers, enabling AI interactions without storing raw footage or audio, per the Financial Times. Users would query this metadata, not direct recordings. A July 2025 whitepaper described the concept.

The LED indicator, typically activated during recording, would remain off during AI-driven tasks like scanning menus.
A Fractured Trust: Privacy Fears and Design Compromises
A company spokesperson, Dave Arnold, told The Verge the glasses must “be loved by both people wearing them and those around them.” The firm claims its devices prioritize “privacy built in from the ground up.”
From Q&A to Continuous AI: Meta’s Ambitions
Meta is discussing if it would use the captured data for training its AI models. It may also bring the “super sensing” features to glasses it has already released, the FT says. A March blog post about new Ray-Ban Meta glasses outlined plans to transform its AI assistant into a “personal agent” operating continuously.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg, in the company’s Q1 2026 earnings call, said that he was “really excited to see the glasses evolve from being able to answer questions to being able to be a personal agent that’s with you all day long, helping you remember things and achieve your goals.”
The Road Ahead for Meta’s Wearables
Meta has not commented on internal prototypes, but its public statements suggest a long-term push for AI-powered wearables.
As development progresses, the project remains in the prototype phase.
