Ryan Gosling Faces Extinction in “Project Hail Mary” Trailer
The latest trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller, “Project hail Mary,” showcases Ryan Gosling as an unlikely hero tasked with a monumental mission. Based on the novel by Andy Weir, the film centers on Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher unexpectedly thrust into the role of astronaut.
The premise unfolds as Grace awakens from a coma aboard a spaceship with no memory of his journey or its purpose. He soon discovers he’s humanity’s last hope, sent to combat a mysterious phenomenon causing the sun to dim and threatening all life on Earth.
Gosling described the film as “insanely aspiring” and “massive in scope” during a presentation at CinemaCon, highlighting the challenges and rewards of bringing such a story to the big screen. He also noted the film embodies the kind of spectacle audiences seek in a theatrical experience. The trailer, released by Amazon MGM Studios, opens with a disoriented Gosling realizing the gravity of his situation – light-years away from home and wholly unprepared for space travel. Flashbacks reveal the desperate circumstances that led to his mission: a looming extinction event and his unique scientific understanding of the crisis.
The film promises a blend of suspense and humor, showcasing Gosling’s comedic timing with lines like,”I can’t even moonwalk!” – a playful nod to his previous role as Neil Armstrong in “First Man.”
The trailer hints at a pivotal encounter with an alien being, a crucial element from the source material that holds the key to saving Earth and perhaps more.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, “Project Hail Mary” continues weir’s accomplished track record of book adaptations, following the acclaimed 2015 film “The Martian.” Another of Weir’s novels, “Artemis,” is also currently in development with the same directing duo.
“Project Hail Mary” is scheduled for release in theaters on March 20.
