Cork Man Sentenced for Acid Threat Against Ex-Partner

A man from Cork, Ireland, has been sentenced to two years and three months in prison, backdated to when he entered custody, with the remainder of the sentence suspended, after threatening to throw acid at his ex-partner. The incident occurred in August 2020, and the sentencing took place on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

Details of the Threat

The man threatened the woman, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship that began whereas both were undergoing addiction treatment, stating she “won’t be able to recognise your face” after he threw a bottle of acid at her. He also threatened to kill her and damage her property, saying he would “place your door in.” The threats were made while a barring order was in place against him.

Delayed Prosecution and Mitigation

Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes explained the delay in bringing the case to court, noting that the accused fled to the United Kingdom shortly after making the threats and only recently returned to Ireland. Despite the severity of the threats, the woman spoke in support of the accused during the sentencing hearing, expressing her desire for him to maintain access to their children.

Court Conditions and Rehabilitation

Judge Helen Boyle stipulated that the suspension of the sentence is conditional upon the man continuing to attend the Men Overcoming Violent Emotions (MOVE) programme. This program aims to address violent behavior and provide support for men seeking to change their patterns of abuse.

Admission and Remorse

When questioned by authorities, the man admitted to making the threats but claimed he had no intention of carrying them out. However, the court considered the seriousness of the threats and the fear they instilled in the victim when determining the sentence.
