Mobile Health Unit Saves Lives by Spotting High Blood Pressure
In 2024, the Irish Heart Foundation’s Mobile Health Unit made a significant impact, providing over 6,000 free heart health checks across 26 counties in Ireland. These checks, made possible through the generous support of Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, proved crucial in identifying individuals at risk of heart disease and stroke.
Life-Saving Findings
A recent evaluation by researchers at Southeast Technological University (SETU) highlighted the importance of the mobile unit. Shockingly, almost one in four people who underwent a heart check were advised to see their GP for further assessment. One case involved a patient whose blood pressure was so high after the mobile unit check that they were rushed to the emergency department following their doctor’s examination.
The assessments include vital checks like blood pressure and pulse readings, along with lifestyle assessments. These screenings help identify potential issues early on, giving individuals the opportunity to take proactive steps towards better health.
Awareness and Action
The evaluation revealed that over 22% of the 300 men and women who used the mobile unit had high blood pressure. What’s even more concerning is that almost 40% of participants were unaware of their blood pressure levels before the check. The good news is that with early detection, high blood pressure can be effectively managed.
As a result of the screening, 10.3% were diagnosed with high blood pressure and began taking medication, while 2.6% needed immediate emergency department care. The mobile health unit also inspired positive lifestyle changes in nearly half the participants, with many making dietary changes, increasing their physical activity, quitting smoking, or reducing alcohol consumption.
Call to Action
“The good news,” says Janis Morrissey, director of health promotion, information and training with the Irish Heart Foundation, “is that once diagnosed, it is easily managed. Everyone over 30 should get checked every five years, and a GP can assess individual risk levels and advise on the frequency of checks.” She emphasizes the critical role of early detection in preventing heart disease and stroke.
The Irish Heart Foundation relies on the generosity of the public and corporate partners like Pfizer Healthcare Ireland to continue providing this vital service.
