Hubei Angel Biotech Leads Push for Microbial Protein Industry in China
As global protein shortages loom, Xiong Tao, a deputy to the National People’s Congress and Chairman of Hubei Angel Biotechnology Group, is advocating for the rapid development of China’s microbial protein industry. He proposes a national strategy to bolster this emerging sector, aiming to secure national food security and reduce reliance on imported protein sources.
Global Protein Shortage and China’s Dependence
Xiong Tao highlighted the growing global challenge of protein scarcity, exacerbated by China’s large population and significant import dependence. A United Nations report predicts a global protein shortage of 250 million tons by 2050 . Currently, China relies heavily on imports for key protein sources like soy protein and whey protein.
Microbial Protein: A Sustainable Solution
Microbial protein, produced through fermentation processes, offers a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional animal and plant-based proteins. Unlike conventional methods, microbial protein production is less constrained by land availability, climate, and agricultural technology, and generates lower carbon emissions. This makes it a key breakthrough in addressing the protein shortage, according to Xiong Tao.
Progress and Challenges in China
While some countries have established regulations and applications for yeast protein in human food and animal feed, China currently lacks comprehensive standards and regulatory support in this area. Currently, Chinese yeast protein products are primarily exported, adhering to the standards of the destination country. Despite a strong technical foundation, the full potential for localized industrial development remains untapped.
Angel Yeast’s Pioneering Role
Angel Yeast has made significant strides in the field, with its self-developed yeast protein being included in the National Health Commission’s catalog of new food raw materials in December 2023 . This approval marks the first instance of a microbial protein raw material being approved in China and is expected to drive the establishment of industry standards. Angel Yeast has also put a 10,000-ton yeast protein production line into operation and has integrated microbial proteins into its “15th Five-Year Plan” for future growth.
Policy Recommendations
Xiong Tao proposed several key policy recommendations to accelerate the development of the microbial protein industry:
- Prioritize the industry for national support, focusing on advanced manufacturing, core technology research, and national R&D projects.
- Establish a national or provincial-level research platform to foster collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions.
- Develop and implement comprehensive standards and specifications for the entire process, from strain screening to product quality testing.
- Expedite the regulatory approval process for new microbial protein strains.
- Promote the application of microbial proteins in human food, animal feed, and other fields to drive large-scale, localized development.
China Merchants Group and Technological Innovation
Alongside advancements in biotechnology, broader technological innovation is being supported by entities like China Merchants Group, a state-owned enterprise with a history dating back to 1872 . The group operates a national-level technology business incubator and angel investment platform, fostering growth in various industries.
Recent Developments in Corporate Leadership
Recent developments in corporate leadership, including investigations into figures like Jiang Shujie, Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Investment Group , underscore the importance of ethical governance as China pursues ambitious economic and technological goals.
The development of the microbial protein industry represents a strategic move for China, offering a pathway to enhance food security, promote sustainable practices, and establish a leadership position in the burgeoning field of alternative proteins.
