Naples Metro Line 7: A New Connection with an Artistic Touch
Naples is expanding its metro system! Though not yet open to the public, two new stations on Line 7 – Monte sant’Angelo – University and Monte Sant’Angelo – Traiano – have recently been inaugurated. This new route will directly connect Naples city center to the modern University Center in Monte Sant’Angelo. It’s a clear signal of the city’s commitment to investing in art and tourism along its metropolitan stops.
What makes these stations truly special? Access to both is marked by stunning sculptural entrances designed by renowned British artist Anish Kapoor. the Monte Sant’Angelo – University station features a structure built from Cor-ten steel, while Monte Sant’Angelo – Traiano boasts an aluminum design.Expect to ride through these artistic gateways within a month.
A Modern Metropolitan Infrastructure
Construction was carried out by Webuild on behalf of EAV (Autonomous Authority Volturno), bringing this project to life in the Campania region. Line 7, when complete, will link the city center with both the western and Phlegraean areas, creating a key strategic transportation hub. It will also integrate with existing metro lines 1 and 2, expanding the overall network.
Soon, the “Bretella di Monte Sant’Angelo” – the connecting section featuring Kapoor’s sculptures – will open to passengers. But don’t think these entrances are all there is to it. From an engineering perspective, what you see above ground is just the entrance, or “porta,” to the station itself.
the stations extend far below the surface, developing into tunnels where trains will pass. each station is essentially an extension of the tunnel, but with a different geometry. This expanded space is necessary to house platforms, access points, technical rooms, and passenger services. Building these large underground cavities required meaningful stabilization work, specifically using shotcrete – a sprayed concrete technique – to reinforce the surrounding hillsides.
