Born in Hawaii as the son of a Hawaiian and a mother with German, Irish and indigenous roots Jason Momo also a gifted surf. He started surfing as a child. In his youth he was a swimmer of competition before he played a role in the successful series “Baywatch” in 1999, which got his acting career rolling.
Now the “Aquaman” star revealed that he had been killed in the water in the past.
Jason Momoa: near-death experience in surfing accident
In the “Smartless” podcast as a guest, Jason Momoa told how he would almost be drowned – despite his skills as a surfer and swimmer. The incident occurred before the Mauis coast.
“I was paddling, we went in at Jaws,” said the 46-year-old about the island’s largest surf spot. “We paddled along the coast for about 21 kilometers. I was almost a mile off the coast, and then my leash was torn,” he recalled.
Momoa, who played the leading role in “Stargate: Atlantis” at the time, said he was “quite well trained” at that time, so that he was “good” at first, but then the waves started to hit him with full force.
“I got some upside down. They are quite large, about three meters high Hawaiian waves,” he said. “But at that time I was probably half a mile off the coast.”
So he had to stay afloat in the troubled lake. But his strength let him down at some point. According to his own information, he got to a point at a point at which he “stuck at this crazy point”, which he thought was the outer edge of a coral reef, which made him invisible to his friends.
“I was actually on the outer reef and they couldn’t see me,” he said. “I had my paddle and waved it around with it and they couldn’t see me and the waves were so big.”
“Couldn’t move my arms anymore”
At that moment he only had to think of his and Lisa Bonets at that time three -month -old daughter Lola Iolani: “I looked into it and only thought – my daughter was three months old at the time – and I just lost my version.”
“I was out there for a while and just couldn’t see anyone who wanted to pick me up,” added Momoa. “I couldn’t move and my arms and legs gave up after a while.”
His body failed. “I couldn’t move my arms anymore and sank into the depth. Then my toe pushed against the reef. I literally gave up and screamed inside.”
Confronted with the possibility of dying, he finally took the coral and captured with the last strength – until one of his surf buddies found him. Due to the strong current, the two lost their boards on the way to the bank.
“I still have to paddle eleven kilometers. My feet are blood -smeared,” Momoa recalled, who finally found back to the shore.
Momoa’s near -death experience was followed by an incredible career upturn, which he still experiences. After getting his leading role as Khal Drogo in “Game of Thrones”, he was hired as “Aquaman” – which made him one of the most famous faces of Hollywood.
