Vienna and Austria Embrace Cycling with “Wien radelt” and “Österreich radelt” Campaigns

As spring arrives, Austria is gearing up for its annual cycling initiative, “Österreich radelt,” with Vienna launching its local version, “Wien radelt.” These campaigns encourage residents to incorporate cycling into their daily routines – for commuting, leisure, or fitness – from March 20th to September 30th.

Mobility Minister Peter Hanke emphasizes the benefits of cycling, stating it’s “healthy exercise in the fresh air and can be easily integrated into everyday life,” contributing to an improved quality of life. The initiative also supports the development of modern cycle paths and clear traffic regulations to enhance cyclist safety and accessibility.

Record Participation and Environmental Impact

In 2023, the campaigns saw significant participation, with 43,895 people collectively cycling approximately 37 million kilometers. This widespread adoption of cycling resulted in a substantial reduction of nearly 7,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, highlighting the positive environmental impact of the initiative.

New Features and Incentives

This year, participants can seamlessly connect the “Österreich radelt” app with popular tracking apps and sports watches, automatically recording their cycling kilometers. A limited-edition bicycle helmet, designed through a recent competition, will be raffled off among participants, promoting both safety and style.

How to Participate

Participation in “Österreich radelt” is free and straightforward. Individuals can track their kilometers via the “Österreich radelt” app or register directly on the www.radelt.at website. Numerous prizes will be awarded throughout the campaign. The app offers features such as trip recording, kilometer tracking, personal statistics, goal setting, and team-based challenges.

The campaigns extend beyond individual participation, welcoming companies, schools, universities, clubs, and communities to register and cycle together, fostering a sense of collective effort and friendly competition.
