Georgi Bliznashki Criticizes Political Landscape, Questions Eurozone Accession

Former acting Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Georgi Bliznashki, has voiced concerns about the current political climate in Bulgaria, particularly regarding the country’s preparedness for Eurozone accession and the composition of its political elite. Bliznashki also commented on Bulgaria’s relationship with a potential “Peace Council” proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Concerns Over Eurozone Accession

Bliznashki expressed disappointment that Bulgaria’s accession to the Eurozone is occurring amidst a period of political instability and institutional conflict. He stated that 2025 should have been a year of consolidation for Bulgaria’s European integration, but instead, the country faces “difficult times” and “turbulence of events.” He urged for “more common sense” from Bulgarian politicians, emphasizing their responsibility in navigating these challenges. Fakti.bg reported on these comments on December 29, 2025.

Criticism of Current Political Forces

Bliznashki criticized the rise of what he described as the “children and grandchildren of State Security” within the current political landscape. He believes this trend, characterized by a division between “forces of good” and accusations of mafia involvement, is “doomed to failure.” He anticipates these dynamics will be evident in upcoming elections.

Questionable Accession to Trump’s “Peace Council”

Bliznashki raised questions about Bulgaria’s accession to a “Peace Council” proposed by Donald Trump. He noted that Rosen Zhelyazkov signed the accession document while serving as a resigned Prime Minister, a decision Bliznashki stated he would not have made in a similar position. He suggested the matter could be challenged in the Constitutional Court.

Caretaker Government Anticipated

Despite the political turmoil, Bliznashki believes Bulgaria will not be left without executive power and that someone will step forward to lead a caretaker government. However, he warned that such a cabinet would face significant pressure to ensure fair elections and implement governance changes.
