New biomarker analyzes make it possible to diagnose Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s years before symptoms begin. Early cancer detection using liquid biopsies is also making progress, but raises ethical questions.
Simple blood tests could soon detect Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer years before the first symptoms appear. The research on so-called Blood biomarkers is making enormous progress and promises a paradigm shift in medicine. Instead of complex procedures such as cerebrospinal fluid sampling, minimally invasive tests will in future enable therapy to begin as early as possible.

The key lies in detecting misfolded proteins in the blood. In Alzheimer’s these are Amyloid-Beta and Yes. New, highly sensitive analysis methods now reliably detect these proteins.
A particularly promising candidate is protein Ptau217. Combined with other clinical data, it can greatly simplify early diagnosis. Studies indicate that abnormal blood values in genetically predisposed people can occur around eleven years before the expected onset of dementia.
Parkinson: In search of the telltale protein
The diagnosis could also change fundamentally with Parkinson’s. So far it has relied almost exclusively on visible motor symptoms. A breakthrough came with the detection of misfolded Alpha-Synucleina key protein in the disease.
With the help of so-called Seed Amplification Assays (SAA) the protein is detected. This currently works in nerve water – research is feverishly working on a version for blood samples. Such tests are the prerequisite for preventative therapies that experts believe will be realistic in the next one to two decades.

Are your blood values interpreted correctly? Many laboratory findings are complicated and lead to uncertainty – especially when it comes to early warning signs of Alzheimer’s or other diseases. The free 25-page “Laboratory values self-check” report simply explains which blood values (e.g. TSH, cholesterol, inflammatory markers) are really relevant, when special tests make sense and how you can avoid misinterpretations. Ideal for anyone who wants to better understand blood tests and discuss them meaningfully with their doctor. Download the lab value self-check now for free
Early cancer detection: hope with risks
In oncology are Liquid Biopsies already in use. Tests like that Gallery Test analyze circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) in the blood and can provide clues to various types of cancer.
* Studies show that they detect more cases of cancer than traditional screening methods.
* But sensitivity is still limited, which can lead to false positive results.
Specialist societies therefore currently do not see these blood tests as a replacement, but only as a possible supplement to established programs such as mammography.
The long way to the doctor’s office
Despite the euphoria, the road to clinical routine is rocky. The tests must prove their reliability in large population studies and undergo strict approval procedures. Many of the high-tech methods, such as mass spectrometry, are still limited to special laboratories.
Early detection also raises ethical questions: What does knowing that there is a high risk mean when there is no preventive treatment yet? Experts are calling for comprehensive information about the benefits and possible psychological stress.
A new era of prevention is dawning
The development undeniably heralds a new era. More blood tests for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and cancer will be added in the coming years. They shift the focus from treatment to prevention. For patients, this means concrete hope that therapies can slow down the progression of the disease much earlier and more effectively.
