Bulgarian Authorities Bust Illegal Steroid Production Ring

Bulgarian authorities have dismantled an illegal operation producing counterfeit anabolic steroids in the capital city, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The operation involved the production of liquid preparations, tablets, ampoules, and blisters branded with the name of a non-existent pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Details of the Operation

The bust followed prior intelligence gathering and identified a man with a 2022 police record for the same crime as the operator of the illegal production facility. The suspect distributed the drugs through a website and social media page. Authorities seized millions of ampoules and blisters containing anabolic substances.

Chief Commissioner Lyubomir Nikolov, director of the Sofia Directorate of Internal Security (SDVR), stated that the investigation began with a tip-off from Metropolitan Customs, who intercepted a shipment of empty blisters from the Netherlands. Operational perform led authorities to the storage and production facility.

Financial and Health Concerns

Nikolov emphasized the significant financial implications of the operation, noting that the illicit activity generated substantial, untaxed revenue, harming the national budget. He urged the public to avoid purchasing similar products of unverified quality and origin, warning of potential health risks due to unknown substances used in such facilities.

The head of the Health and Safety Administration highlighted the danger to users who are unknowingly injecting or ingesting substances of unknown composition.

Ongoing Investigation

The Ministry of the Interior stated that this action represents the first phase of a broader operation to identify and apprehend the chemists and other individuals involved in the production and distribution network.

Understanding Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic steroids are synthetically produced variants of the naturally occurring male hormone testosterone. According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), they are Schedule III substances under the Controlled Substances Act [1]. While some steroids have legitimate medical uses, such as treating testosterone deficiency or delayed puberty, they are often abused to promote muscle growth and enhance physical performance [2].

The DEA notes that testosterone, trenbolone, oxymetholone, methandrostenolone, nandrolone, stanozolol, boldenone, and oxandrolone are some of the anabolic steroids that are abused [2].

Steroid Use in the Military

Steroid use is strictly prohibited within the military. Violating Article 112a of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) can result in severe penalties, including reduction in rank and expulsion from service [3]. Service members may unknowingly consume banned substances due to the availability of products with misleading labeling or undeclared ingredients [3].
