Butler County Humane Society Braves Winter Weather to Care for Animals

Connoquenessing Township, PA – Despite recent severe winter weather, including snow and sub-zero temperatures, the Butler County Humane Society (BCHS) continues to provide care for the animals in its charge. Staff and volunteers are adapting routines to ensure the dogs and cats remain safe and comfortable during the cold snap.

Adjusting Outdoor Time for Dogs

Normally, dogs at the BCHS receive at least 20 minutes of outdoor time each day. Still, with the recent inclement weather, that time has been reduced to approximately five minutes per outing, according to Nikki Healy, marketing and development coordinator for the Humane Society. These shorter breaks are taken more frequently – five to six times daily – to prevent the animals from getting too cold. Butler Eagle

Around-the-Clock Staffing and Enrichment

The BCHS maintains consistent staffing levels, even during shelter closures and after-hours, ensuring continuous care for the animals. Beyond brief outdoor excursions, staff focuses on providing enrichment activities, including one-on-one time with the dogs, puzzle toys, and training exercises. Volunteers also contribute by walking dogs and socializing cats. Butler Eagle

Meet Panda

One resident of the BCHS, Panda, a handsome Border Collie mix, enjoys playing in the snow. He was first taken in on December 2, 2025. Panda is described as having a big heart and a love for life. He would thrive in a home without cats, and a dog introduction is required if there is already a dog in the household. Butler County Humane Society Facebook, Butler County Humane Society Instagram
