BYD Denza Z9 GT Sets Fresh Range Standard for EVs
BYD’s luxury brand, Denza, has unveiled the updated Z9 GT, an all-electric shooting brake boasting a claimed range of up to 1,036 km (644 miles) under the CLTC testing cycle. This positions the Z9 GT as potentially the longest-range electric vehicle currently available, marking a significant leap in EV technology and a bold move for BYD’s premium ambitions.
Record-Breaking Range and Battery Technology
The Denza Z9 GT’s extended range is made possible by a new 122.496 kWh Blade battery pack. According to Denza, this represents a 64% improvement over the previous Z9 GT EV, which offered a CLTC range of up to 630 km (391 miles) [1]. While the CLTC standard is known to be more optimistic than European WLTP or EPA standards, a range exceeding 1,000 km is a notable achievement.
Interestingly, the standard Denza Z9 sedan, utilizing the same battery packs, is listed with a potential CLTC range of up to 1,068 km (664 miles), potentially surpassing the Z9 GT [1]. Denza has yet to officially confirm this figure.
Powertrain Options: EV and PHEV
The Denza Z9 GT will be available in both fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powertrains. The EV variants will offer two battery pack options: 102.326 kWh and 122.496 kWh, providing CLTC ranges of 820-1,036 km (509-644 miles) respectively [1], [2].
The PHEV versions will be equipped with a 63.82 kWh battery pack, delivering an all-electric CLTC range of over 400 km (248 miles), nearly doubling the 201 km (125 miles) range of the current Denza Z9 GT PHEV [1]. This unusually high electric range for a plug-in hybrid blurs the line between PHEV and full EV capability.
Design and Interior Features
The Denza Z9 GT features a sleek shooting brake design. Its dimensions are substantial, measuring 5,195 mm in length, 1,990 mm in width, 1,480 mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 3,125 mm [2].
Inside, the vehicle boasts a high-tech cabin dominated by a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, alongside dual 12-inch screens for the driver and passenger [1]. The Z9 GT similarly incorporates a modern driving assistant system called “God’s Eye”.
Performance Specifications
The rear-wheel drive version of the Z9 GT will offer around 500 hp, while the all-wheel drive version will deliver up to 1,140 hp [3]. The PHEV powertrain combines a 2.0T engine with three electric motors, producing a combined output of around 860 horsepower [3].
